Sornal Quarterly
— The Publication

Foundation Notes.

Sornal Quarterly began as a private coach observation log, maintained across years of working with individuals pursuing gradual, sustainable changes to their body composition. The publication grew from those accumulated notes — a record of patterns observed not in laboratories, but in the everyday rhythms of people living working lives.

01 — Origin

How the Log Became a Publication

── ── ──

The observation that prompted the publication was not a dramatic insight. It was, instead, the accumulation of a particular type of repetition: individuals who maintained consistent sleep schedules showed more predictable progress than those who did not, even when their nutritional patterns were broadly similar. The pattern appeared across enough cases, over a long enough period, to warrant documentation.

The first iteration of what became Sornal Quarterly was a private document — a coach's log shared with a small group of practitioners who were observing similar patterns in their own work. It was in the consolidation of those contributions, and in the process of editing them for a broader readership, that the publication took its current form.

The name Sornal is an invented word. It carries no etymology and no inherited meaning — which was the intention. The publication is not affiliated with any institution, movement, or commercial interest. It is a record of what careful observation produces when it is given time and editorial patience.

The quarterly publication schedule was chosen deliberately. In a subject area prone to trend-driven urgency, producing four considered issues per year seemed more honest than maintaining a high-frequency content calendar. The pace of the publication mirrors the pace it recommends: slow, consistent, attentive to the long arc.

Who Writes Here

Eleanor Whitfield, editor of Sornal Quarterly, seated at a wooden desk in a well-lit editorial office, reviewing printed notes
Primary Editor

Eleanor Whitfield

Eleanor maintains a twelve-year observation log focused on the intersection of sleep pattern consistency and long-term body composition across a varied coaching practice. She has worked with individuals ranging from desk-based workers with disrupted rest schedules to endurance athletes managing recovery windows. Her writing draws directly from this log — field notes consolidated and edited for publication, rather than secondary commentary on existing literature.

Eleanor reviews all content published under the Sornal Quarterly banner before it appears. She discloses no commercial relationships with any nutrition product, supplement, or wellness service. Her interests within the publication's scope are sleep architecture, wake-rhythm consistency, and the long-term documentation of habit formation in relation to body composition.

Contributing Editor

Tobias Ashcroft

Tobias contributes to Sornal Quarterly with a focus on the practical dimensions of evening routine design, the relationship between pre-sleep food choices and morning energy, and the behaviour patterns that surround a consistent bedtime window. His background spans movement coaching and nutritional pattern observation, with a particular interest in how the body's daily schedule affects the quality and character of its hunger signals.

His writing for the publication takes the form of extended field notes and analytical observations, often drawing from longitudinal client patterns accumulated across multiple seasons. Tobias serves as second editor for Eleanor's pieces and receives the same review in return.

Guest Writer

Phoebe Marsden

Phoebe Marsden contributes occasional pieces to Sornal Quarterly on the subject of mindful eating in relation to rest quality. Her observations are drawn from a practice focused on gradual habit formation, particularly in the context of individuals managing disrupted schedules — shift workers, new parents, and those navigating irregular working patterns. Her approach emphasises the relationship between evening food choices and the quality of subsequent sleep, a line of inquiry that complements the publication's central focus.

Phoebe's contributions are reviewed by Eleanor Whitfield before publication. She discloses no commercial relationships with any product or service. Her piece on circadian appetite patterns and the late-evening eating window appeared in the publication's second quarter of 2026.

What This Publication Is Not

── ── ──
Stack of notebooks and printed reference materials on a wooden table in a calm editorial workspace, studio lighting

Sornal Quarterly is not a platform for rapid-results thinking. It does not publish content that presents short timeframes as meaningful units of measurement for body composition. It does not feature before-and-after comparisons. It does not carry advertising from supplement companies, nutrition product brands, or any commercial wellness interest. The absence of these things is not accidental — it is a deliberate editorial position.

The publication is also not a substitute for personalised guidance. Articles published here are editorial in nature and reflect the writers' observations on everyday wellness practices. The content is not intended as professional advice, nor as guidance for the management of any specific personal situation. Readers with particular questions about their own routines are encouraged to speak with a qualified wellness or nutrition professional.

What the publication is, in straightforward terms, is a record. It records what a careful coaching practice observes about the relationship between sleep and the everyday choices that shape body composition over time. It records this in writing that is meant to be re-read, not skimmed — writing that accumulates meaning across issues rather than reaching for impact in a single sentence.

Sornal Quarterly operates under the following editorial principles: articles are reviewed by at least one second editor before publication, sources are cited where appropriate, corrections are noted publicly, and writers disclose any commercial relationships that could influence their selection of subject matter.
